Glass and Glazing Systems
History of Glass
It is believed that the Egyptians perfected the art of making glass at around 1500 BC. The basic ingredients used remains relatively unchanged for many years, however the most significant changes to glass making have come in the manufacturing process with the increasing ability to use high levels of heat.
Glass can be categorized by the amount of heat used in the manufacturing process (hot, hotter and hottest).
Annealed Float Glass: is manufactured in a process where molten glass is poured continuously onto a bed of molten glass. The thickness of glass is relative to the rate at which the molten glass flows from the tanks (if the flow rate is slowed down, the glass thickness builds up). Once the glass solidifies it is fed into an annealing oven where it is slowly cooled so that the residual stresses are minimized.
Since annealed glass has a minimum amount of residual surface compression, it is subject to easy breakage.
